Preface

IN THE 25-YEAR PERIOD between 1967 and 1992, Ty Stofflet established a set of records in national and world softball tournaments sanctioned by either the International Softball Congress (ISC), the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) or the International Softball Federation (ISF) that puts him in the category of one of the all-time greats of the game.

His career was sufficiently illustrious and lengthy to enable him to set standards for both the ISC and the ASA even though for most of his career he was able to play in only one sanctioning body’s events within a calendar year. ISC events belong to the decade of the ‘60s, while the ASA years are comprised of the ‘70s and ‘80s. From 1984 on, he was able to compete in both ISC and ASA events, which he did until completing his championship participation in 1992 at age 51.

In three separate years, he was voted Most Valuable Player in the ISC World Tournament – 1967, 1968, 1969. He was the ASA selection for Most Valuable Player in 1971, 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1978.

In his only ISF tournament (1976), playing for the USA in New Zealand, he was voted both Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher. But the records don’t begin to tell the story of the man who became the standard by which all players of his generation are judged.
